Today was our first day of walking on the Camino. We left St Jean Pied de Port St 7:30 am and arrived in Roncevalles at 5:00 pm. What a day!!!

Total Miles Walked: 16 / Total Elevation Climbed: 4300 feet

The day started out in quiet before the sunrise. We made a stop at the church to thank Jesus for His presence and ask for His peace today.

We had forgotten how hard of a climb the first couple of hours are! We ascended about 800 feet per hour. In 2016 we sent our backpacks ahead. This time we carried the extra 20-25 lbs.

Although I prayed often, asking God and the angels to keep the rain away…it appears God’s will was for rain! And the temperature dropped to high 40s.

But this provided for our spiritual journey as our intention was for the salvation of souls. What better way to unite ourselves to Christ’s cross than with some bodily suffering.

But thankfully about 5 miles in we reached Orrison and we’re blessed with a warm bowl of soup and some much needed coffee!

Today we met people from all over the world. And by the time we reached Roncevalles, we were able to attend mass and receive a pilgrim blessing for our journey.

Dinner and a warm bed (well … Bunk beds) are the end to this challenging day.

We now drift off to the sounds of snoring that would make you think there are a few Darth Vader’s in the adjacent bunks 😂

The Lord certainly knew what we needed today for the weather and to put us in the mindset of penance and intercession for others. When the rain started I just had to accept His will. It wasn’t fun today….but it was good. The joy of reaching the end of this day far surpassed the suffering in the body for those hours climbing the mountain. What can be more important than the salvation of souls?

Buen Camino ❤️
